Canary is a psychological short film I wrote and directed as my senior thesis at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The story follows Vic, a sharp-tongued young woman forced into court-mandated therapy after a violent outburst at a club, where her session becomes less about healing and more about control, dismissal, and the exhaustion of trying to be heard. As a female filmmaker, this project was deeply important to me because it allowed me to explore the frustration of women’s anger being corrected before it is understood. Through the metaphor of the canary, the film examines what happens when warning signs are ignored, when pain is minimized, and when a woman’s voice is treated as something to manage instead of something to listen to. From writing the script through directing performance, tone, and visual language, Canary became a way for me to tell a story about female rage, survival, and the consequences of not listening.
